About Us
- Team Bags1240
- Sydney, NSW, Australia
- This is a blog which has been established to share the views of this team on the issues related to environment and society. The inter-connected nature of the problems in the modern, industrialised and globalised world may only be tackled and managed if the various stakeholders succeed in engaging in multi-disciplinary tasks. The team provides a potential solution for the problems posed by the usage of non biodegradable shopping bags.

Plastic Bag Campaign-5 key steps:
1. The Audience-
a. Shoppers, especially the youth as they are always ahead of a particular generation and willing to explore new ideas. They are generally less reluctant to change and by revealing impacts on the future generations young couples are easily addressed.
b. Politicians- since they can provide the necessary incentives or imposed restrictions which would finally drive retail chains, suppliers and shoppers to switch to existing solutions. This is one of the best ways to ensure widespread acceptance.
2. Message and Titles- Switch to biodegradable solutions such as nylon, natural fibres (hemp, cotton, jute) or synthetic materials. Its simple, cost effective, effective life cycle is longer in service. They are less harmful in landfills and depending on the structure, much safer for wildlife. Lower energy needs in refining and production.
3. Research-
a. Required energy and resources in production of blown film polyethylene bags.
b. Contrast with basic alternative solutions such as recycled paper and cotton bags.
c. Reliance on petroleum and their facts such as the projected shortages and the harmful effects may be emphasised.
d. Basic facts like the number of bags being consumed, the number of larger retail shopping chains in NSW, and the number of bags in circulation.
4. Media-
a. Use of the blog to outline major components of texts and scientific research.
b. The posters which are used to inform the audience, raise awareness, and ensure support in preparation of potential rallies or social activities aimed at reaching the political ranks. This is done on specific dates which are significant such as World Environment Day in order to obtain greater leverage.
c. The poster is transformed into a simple ad format for magazines and print media such as the Westfield shopping guide, Jay Jays, General Pants Co., Cotton On, and local classifieds such as the Southern or Wentworth Courier.
d. Finally a mock letter should be arranged to send to the relevant political representatives in order to both emphasise the problems and hopefully win further support for the changes.
5. Build networks- Use the resources provided by Planet Ark, Clean Up Australia, and the various companies which are in the business of production and supply of current polyethylene bags.
6. Lobbying- partially covered in the media letter and the interview mock setups and scripts if time permits.
